Best WiFi for Rural Areas: Extenders & Repeaters
Getting reliable WiFi service in rural areas is often difficult, especially in multi-building properties and large farms when there’s only ONE internet source but a WHOLE lotta ground to cover.
So what’s the solution?
When talking to your ISP (internet service provider) like Comcast or AT&T, they’ll most likely recommend paying for a second internet line just to reach a detached barn or workshop, and uh...no thanks.
So it’s up to you to “extend” your current WiFi signal farther.
Say Hello to My PiFi Friend
The PiFi is a long range WiFi solution made specifically for using one internet source and extending it to other buildings or to the outside.
The PiFi comes in two flavors: building to building (point-to-point) or inside to outside.
Extending Signal from One Building to Another Building
The PiFi Long Range WiFi Repeater is a range extender that shares internet from one building to another up to 1 mile apart.
Here’s how it works:
- All equipment is installed in the building that needs internet.
- The antenna points to an internet source up to 1 mile away.
- WiFi is pulled in and broadcasted in the second building.
Remember, this is a point-to-point connection, meaning internet is shared between the inside of two buildings. So the tradeoff is less bandwidth for more area coverage.
Overview:
- Great for: Detached barns, garages, or workshops; RV campgrounds, or second building.
- Works for all ISPs: Comcast, Charter, AT&T, Verizon, CenturyLink, Cox, Altic, Mediacom, Windstream, and many more internet service providers.
- Compatible with most routers except for Apple routers or a router/modem provided by your ISP.
More Info:
- When installing the antenna, the higher, the better. A clear line of sight immensely helps with better WiFi signal, speeds, and service.
- The PiFi Long Range WiFi Repeater uses 2.4 GHz connection for better long range performance.
- Installation takes about 30 minutes for equipment and another 3 minutes for network configuration.

Extend Signal from Inside to Outside
The PiFi Outdoor WiFi Extender is an access point that boosts WiFi signal from inside to outside up to ½ a mile.
Here’s how it works:
- All equipment is installed outside the home or building.
- The access point connects to your router and the outside antenna.
- The outside antenna broadcasts WiFi signal outside!
Because building material is the number one cause of poor signal, think of the PiFi Outdoor WiFi Extender as a very long straw that allows a long distance location to take a sip of the signal.
The PiFi Outdoor WiFi Extender comes with the option to choose a directional, omni, or whip antenna.
The most important factor is choosing the right antenna:
- Directional Antenna: Up to ½ mile.
- Omni Antenna: Up to ¼ mile.
- Whip Antenna: Up to 100 yards.
It’s recommended to go with a directional antenna, especially if you know which area you want to cover and it’s a bit far from your home or building. It's a specialized performer.
Omni and whip antennas broadcast in a 360 field, but don't reach as far as the directional. They're generalists.
Overview:
- Great for: Farm, yard, pool, and outdoor spots.
- Works for all ISPs: Comcast, Charter, AT&T, Verizon, CenturyLink, Cox, Altic, Mediacom, Windstream, and many more internet service providers.
- Compatible with most routers.

- The PiFi Long Range WiFi Repeater uses 2.4 GHz connection for better long range performance.

Extend Signal from Inside The Home
For in-home WiFi coverage extenders–the kind that improves signal coverage inside the home like a second story or basement–we recommend Orbi, Ubiquiti, and Google WiFi. We focus on long-range WiFi, so those other products are great solutions for in-home boosting.
